For centuries, people have speculated about the “end of the world” as prophesied in the Book of Revelations, alas the “Apocalypse,” a literary genre in which a supernatural being reveals cosmic mysteries or the future to a human intermediary. Whether or not you believe in God, the concept of apocalypse has a long and rich literary and religious tradition whose meaning goes beyond what we see on dramatic movie posters.
The word apocalypse is derived from the Greek word apokálypsis, which translates most literally to “an uncovering.” In the context of religious texts like the Bible, the word is most often used in relation to a holy disclosure of information or knowledge, usually through some sort of prophetic dream or vision. The knowledge in these visions is typically related to either end times or to insights into the truth of the divine.
Without getting into theological interpretation, I wanted to draw attention to the idea of apocalypse because with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine coming on the heels of the global coronavirus pandemic, people all over the world are speculating that “the apocalypse” has begun.
For what it’s worth, I believe that, like so many stories and prophecies of the Bible, the apocalypse is a personal symbol, meaning, we all have “holy disclosure of information or knowledge” in our lifetime to be unveiled, or with which to reconcile. We all face the antichrist and we all have existential choices to make in our lifetime. We all face an “end of the world” in our lifetime, most literally with our own death.
Ukranians are facing an “end of the world” as they know it right now, much like Jews faced an end of the world during the Holocaust. These are not the only end times for people in modern history. I could point to numerous others such as the Chinese Communist Party’s oppression of Falun Gong, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Yemen, and so on.
We also may experience apocalyptic-like seasons in our own lives where heavenly or divine insights might seem as though they are being revealed to us, individually, not collectively, oft times within grave circumstances.
Which brings me to my point…Why are we being forced to focus on Russia and Ukraine?
Despite all the other violent Putin invasions, e.g. Georgia in 2008 and Crimea in 2014, plus all the other violent atrocities across the globe, why is this one particular event being shoved in our faces and guilting us into taking a stand for Ukraine and against Russia?
Who wants this division? I don’t think it’s all on Putin, but it’s certainly being theatrically presented that way.
This isn’t to say that the people of Ukraine do not need let alone deserve the world’s support in every way shape and form. I, like many, have Ukrainian and Russian family and friends and co-workers, all of whom are deeply impacted by Putin’s invasion.
My caution, if you will, is that Ukraine is a pawn in a larger war. Not over just a single matter such as energy supply, which is most certainly a factor, but several factors, including Putin’s ideological aspirations for Russia.
The Pale and Red Horses
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are among the most dramatic images in the Bible. Described by the apostle John in Revelation 6:1-8, the four horsemen are graphic symbols for the destruction that will come to the earth during the end times: Conquest, War, Famine, and Death.
The first horseman, a man on a white horse, is detailed in Revelation 6:2:
I looked up and saw a white horse standing there. Its rider carried a bow, and a crown was placed on his head. He rode out to win many battles and gain the victory. (NLT)
John seems to be more focused on the riders than the horses. This first horseman is holding a bow and given a crown and is obsessed with conquest.
Some would argue that the Covid-19 literally is the white horse because of the “crown” correlation and white robes.
The second horseman is described in Revelation 6:4:
Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword. (NIV)
The second rider appears on a fiery red horse, with power to take away peace from the earth and make humans slay one another. He carries a mighty sword, which is not a large two-edged sword, but a dagger, like the kind used in hand-to-hand combat. This horseman symbolizes the devastating violence of warfare.
With Russia’s war against Ukraine coming on the heels of a global pandemic, you can’t help but wonder what is going on in the heavens to which we are not privy. But apocalypse or not, We The People must expose and fight corruption and destructive agendas that destroy societies. We must
We can also develop parallel societies where people strive to thrive as human beings without totalitarian technocratic dictatorship.
Let’s discuss…
For the purpose of this article, I leave you with the question…Who is really behind the narrative of the Russia-Ukraine war and what is their agenda? It’s not a simple question, and it was the basis for our conversation in the this episode of The Liberation Wave.
